Help Me!  Get Help From Horus

Probably.  Sometimes there's nothing to be done but change a few settings in the hardware.  Sometimes, in attempts to install or configure Linux,  a user will inadvertently wipe out  an existing operating system.  Sometimes there are hardware issues which cannot be reconciled...  If I have time and you do, too, I'll at least try to help or point you in the direction of someone else who can help.  (After all, it ain't like I know everything there is to know about Linux!)

If you want to get Linux to run on your machine, the best thing to do is get help before you attempt the actual installation.  There are pitfalls out there that can occur during installation, and they vary from system to system because of wide variations in hardware and so forth.  One of the best ways to do this is to attend an InstallFest put on by a local LUG.  USM LUG holds InstallFests on a semi-regular basis.  As soon as I find it, I will post a link here to their events calendar.

I've helped people around Hattiesburg to install their first Linux system, and, if we can get it together, I'd be glad to help you out.  Click the Get Help From Horus link at left to see if we can hook up.

Failing in that, do all your homework before attempting your first installation of any new system.  That includes getting familiar with your hardware's technical specifications, and documenting some of them beforehand so that you are ready with the numbers should you need them.  Most distros include, somewhere on the CDs, an Installation Guide or Quickstart Guide.  Definitely read that, and gather any information requested therein.  As Linux has become more advanced in recent years with regard to installation, the process should go smoothly anyway, but it still sure pays to be prepared.
