I've recently become aware of an AOL client which runs under Linux.  The link for it is:  http://www.yolinux.com/TUTORIALS/LinuxTutorialAOL.html

I have no idea whether or not this thingy works, but the screenshots at that link appear very promising.  They state that you will have to use AOL under Windows to get signed up to AOL and then install the PengAOL client.

DISCLAIMER:  I'm one of those nerds who believes that friends don't let friends use AOL, and I don't make it a point to fool with AOL any more than I have to...  so why am I doing this?  Because I know that there are lots of AOL users out there looking for alternatives to Windows.  Perhaps if enough of them used PengAOL to log on with, AOL would wise up and produce an "authorized" AOL client for Linux. (And... that would be a good thing.)  I know only enough about AOL to be dangerous, and enough about Linux to be extremely dangerous.  ANY ATTEMPT TO USE AOL WITH LINUX IS AT YOUR OWN RISK.  I will not be held responsible for any data or other losses you may incur as a result of such experimentation.

I may be helping a friend of mine who uses AOL (despite my protestations) to set up such a client on a Linux system at some time in the future.  If so, I will chronicle the experiment here.
