Benjamin Arnold Fussell -- Alachua County, Florida -- Benjamin Arnold Fussell (b. 4 Nov 1845 Alachua County, Florida, d. 27 Jul 1925 Butler County, Alabama) on 9 Nov 1861, at the age of sixteen, enlisted in Capt. Clark's Company, Davis' Regiment, Florida Cavalry of the Confederate Army at Newnansville, Florida, to serve for a period of twelve months. On 26 Nov 1863, he was listed as missing in action. He was taken prisoner of war by the Union Army on that date at Missionary Ridge at Chattanooga, Tennessee, and from there was forwarded as a prisoner to Louisville, Kentucky, on 7 Dec 1863. Then on 8 Dec 1863, he was sent to Rock Island Barracks in Illinois.
To gain his freedom and avoid staying in a Union prison, he chose to serve with the United States Army doing frontier service in the West fighting Indians. He enlisted as a private in Co. F, 3rd Regt. of the United States Volunteer Infantry.
For an excellent discussion of how it came about that approximately six thousand Confederate soldiers held in prison camps volunteered to serve in the Union army to assist in the campaign in the west, one should read The Galvanized Yankees by Dee Brown.
