North Carolina

In 1716 David Lee lived in Chowan County, North Carolina, where he owned a plantation called Wallowing Root. His wife was Mary Sullivan, daughter of Darby Sullivan. David Lee moved from Chowan County to Bath County, North Carolina, where he purchased land in 1720. In 1724, he sold his land in Bath County and moved down the coast to New Hanover County, where he patented land on Black River and where he died in 1743. The oldest son of David Lee was Bryan (Bryant) Lee, who died in New Hanover County in 1768. Bryan Lee's son, Solomon, married Temperance Spearman, daughter of Andrew and Mary (Farris) Spearman. Solomon Lee served in the American Revolution in the militia from Wilmington District. He died in New Hanover County in 1818. His known children were: Bryan, who died in the War of 1812 in Louisiana; James, Jr.; William, Jr.; Sarah; Solomon, Jr., born 1784, who married Meriby____; Bridget, born 1785, who married James Thomas, and settled in St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana; Elizabeth, born 1786, who married Joseph Meredith and settled in Whitfield County, Georgia; Mary, who married a Smith; Samuel, born 1790, who married Nancy Cowart (Coward); Andrew, born ca. 1791, who married Annie Peacock; and David, born 1797 or 1798, who married Christiana Mallow. There were probably two other daughters whose names are unknown.

South Carolina

Four sons of Solomon Lee were in Barnwell District, South Carolina, in the early 1800's. Records show that Solomon, Jr.; Samuel; David, and Andrew resided there. Samuel and Nancy Cowart Lee had the following children, all born in South Carolina: Needham W., born 1814; Wilson, born 1816; Hansford D., born 1819; Barnette, born 1821; Jane, born 1823; and S. Allen, born 1827.

David and Andrew Lee probably died in Barnwell County.

Georgia

Solomon Lee, Jr. and Samuel Lee moved with their families from Barnwell County, South Carolina, to Early County, Georgia, sometime after 1830. Samuel Lee's son, Needham W. Lee, married Martha Ann Parker in 1835 in Early County. Solomon remained in Early County until the late 1840's, when he moved with several of his children to Simpson County, Mississippi.

Mississippi

Samuel Lee moved to Hancock County, Mississippi, before 1840, where it appears that he was counted in the household of his son Needham W. Lee in the census. Samuel Lee was still in Hancock County in 1850, when he was counted in the census with his wife Nancy and youngest son Allen. Needham W. Lee's wife, Martha Ann, died prior to 1840, probably in Early County, Georgia. Needham W. Lee, moved to Lawrence County in the 1840's. He married Catherine Jane Williams, daughter of Daniel and Mary Williams, in Lawrence County in 1845. Samuel and Nancy Lee were counted in the census of Hancock County in 1850. It is thought that they moved to Lawrence County, where they died prior to the 1860 census.

Needham W. and Catherine Jane Lee had the following children: Jasper; Sarah; George; Josephine; Calvin; William; Daniel; Susan; John; Franklin; Lucinda; Dicy; and Needham, Jr.

Needham W. Lee died in Lawrence County in 1863 and is buried in the Needham Lee Cemetery in what is now Jefferson Davis County. Little is known of Needham Lee's siblings. His brother, Hansford, is thought to have died in Early County, Georgia. His youngest brother, Allen, who was apparently retarded, was counted in the household of Needham W. Lee in Lawrence County in the 1860 census, the last record we have of him. Needham's brother, Wilson, moved to Harris County, Texas, as shown below.

Texas

Samuel Lee's son, Wilson, resided in Harris County, Texas, in 1859. He married Matilda Sikes in 1849 in Lawrence County, Mississippi, and most of their children were born in Mississippi. Wilson Lee died in Harris County, Texas, in 1864.
