SIRMON FAMILY GENEALOGY

S*rm*n Family DNA Project

DNA Project Information

As a participant in the S*rm*n DNA Project, you will qualify for a reduced rate on the Y chromosome DNA tests provided by Family Tree DNA (FTDNA).

Results obtained from this testing are completely confidential and can not be used for any other purpose. Each participant is assigned a unique customer (kit) number. The identity of participants is not revealed to the lab at the University of Arizona where the DNA analysis is performed. Only the customer number and surname of the donor of the sample are released to the lab.

The 12-marker test normally costs $149 plus $2 shipping. Participants in our family project pay $99, plus $2 shipping in the US, $4 international. The 25-marker test normally costs $ 229 plus $2 shipping. Participants in our family project pay $169, plus $2 shipping in the US, $4 international. The 37-marker test normally costs $ 289 plus $2 shipping. Participants in our family project pay $228, plus $2 shipping in the US, $4 international.

The Table below demonstrates the increased precision expected in calculating the MRCA from increasing the number of markers in the test. We recommend choosing at least the 25-marker test.

Number of matching markers 50% probability that the MRCA was no longer than this number of generations 50% probability that the MRCA was no longer than this number of generations 95% probability that the MRCA was no longer than this number of generations

Interested parties should contact one of the project administrators (use window at left) to be enrolled in the project and to have a testing kit mailed to them from Family Tree DNA. Participants may make payment to FTDNA by credit card when ordering their kits or FTDNA will send an invoice for payment with the kit.

The testing kit consists of two small brushes and two vials for collection each filled with a preservative liquid. Participants brush the inside of their cheek with one of the brushes and then insert the brush into one of the vials (instructions included). This is repeated with the other brush. Both vials are mailed to FTDNA using the envelope that is provided. To view the test kit at FTDNA click on Kit.

A release form is included with the kit. This form authorizes FTDNA to share your test results ONLY with others whose tests indicate that there is an ancestral relationship and who have also signed the release form. It will then be possible for these individuals to exchange information. Test results take several weeks for processing. When the results are obtained, participants will be informed of DNA matches. The results will also be added to this web site.

Complete instructions are included with the kit and more information is available on FTDNA's web site. (use window at left)

We invite you to become a participant and find where you fit in the family. If you would like more information about becoming a participant, you may contact the Project Co-Administrator for the UK or the Project Co-Administrator for the USA.
