A sequel to contours provocations journal - 2008-0603-2200-tue One of the major features of the Guild's building is a splendid shop with items from dozens of artists. The Guild's home page gives an idea of the selection. (It's a beautiful page, but for some reason it is set to redirect within 10 seconds to a second page that shows only a handful of pieces.) I'd decided to buy a piece to show support for the guild. But there were so many wonderful samples that it was a hard decision. But the process became easier as I looked at some of the prices. For example, I was greatly enamored of the wooden ribbed bowl-like sculpture on the home page, but the price was out of my range. I also resolved to purchase a piece, large or small, anytime I visited. A perfect way to support the concept, and a great way to add piece to my limited art collection. However, I did discover a three-dimensional metal irregular-star-shaped sculpture that was within my price limit. (Alas, my inability to snap it with my cell phone cam. But it just will not do smaller objects even in direct sunlight.) When I first saw the piece, I knew there was an association buried deep in my subconscious. But it was very, very illusive. Then suddenly in the afternoon, I realized it was the perfect embodiment of Allen Ginsberg's "starry dynamo" from "Howl." "I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked, dragging themselves through the negro streets at dawn looking for an angry fix, angelheaded hipsters burning for the ancient heavenly connection to the starry dynamo in the machinery of night..." The next week, after Sunday lunch, I dragged a friend to the shop. and he was as equally fascinated by the bridling and the shop as I was. And again, I looked for a prize. This time is was a 12-inch high, 4-inch square glazed "vase." The glaze is an off white with very subtly vertically raked with surrounding narrow bands of dark brown approximately every inch. Not as dramatic as the "starry dynamo," but still an impressive work. (In Monday - 2008-0609-2200 / Out - 2008-0611-0800) This entry was written in several settings. Pax! Erin go braugh! Je accuse...
