Sunday 20070617 - Rain - Wet New Yorkers going up steps

below "Fiddler on the Roof" sign A different take on rain. Some very wet New Yorkers, residents and tourists, trudging up a flight of step underneath a "Zero Mostel - Fiddler on the Roof (Limited Engagement)" sign. Zero Mostel played Tevye in "Fiddler on the Roof" which initially ran from Sep 22, 1964 to Jul 2, 1972. Total number of performances, if you're counting: 3242. Zero also starred in a revival that ran from Dec 28, 1976 to May 21, 1977. Total performances, 167. Alas, he died a few months later on September 8, 1977. My guess would be this photo dates from the revival because of the "Limited Engagement" notice. Remember that "Fiddler on the Roof" has a famous song in Act I called, "If I Were a Rich Man." Nice use of the subjunctive. Until reading the article on him, I was not aware of Mostel's testimony before the House Un-American Activities Committee. I had always associated HUAC with Senator Joseph McCarthy. Instead he was chair of the Committee on Government Operations which included the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, and the mandate of this subcommittee was sufficiently flexible to allow McCarthy to use it for his own investigations of Communists in the government. It would also seem fairly obvious that a Senator would not be in charge of a House committee. Duhhhhh! Have you noticed the discussions of the rain image are becoming more and more digressive? And very stream-of-consciousness-like. A friend and I had our standard lunch at Macaroni's. We were a bit concerned because it was Father's Day. But on Sunday, Macaroni's attracts larger parties, and the two-seater-booths in smoking receive little attention. We spent part of the meal trying to figure out what had happened to a call he had made earlier to my cell. I've learned that the cell has three themes that are a combination of desktop, call indicator (such as vibrate only) and aural call signal.. Two of the aural signals are awful. I much prefer the third. If a call comes in, and is not answered, it goes to voice mail which in turn sends you a chirp or beep. For some reason, I heard the chirp, thinking it was a call, and when there was no additional sound, I assumed it was a wrong number. I opened the phone, but either did not see the voice mail icon, or it had not yet arrived. I've noticed there are time lags between various events. What I never could figure out was why did I not hear the original call indicator. Among the umpteen options, there is something that says if you're unavailable to send the call to voice mail. But it never says what unavailable includes. And I never could figure it out. I suppose if the phone was off, then it would go to voice mail, but then you wouldn't hear any response including the voice mail chirp. I trying different options by using the cordless house phone, but it's batteries went defunct and need replacing, so I'm still puzzled. By the end of the meal, I was getting a headache, which I always get when I eat at Macaroni's. Could it be an allergic reaction to the asparagus? And when I get home, I have to have a lengthy lie down. (Out -Sunday - 20070617 - 1208: $20.42 - Bank Debit Card) I watered the plants and the yard - that I remember. And I recall taking a long nap. And I must have gotten up around 1700 because that's the start date for the Friday journal. And it looks like I worked on it at several different points. Well, one other thing did happen. Somewhere in the evening, I glanced at my bookmarks, and the "Blogs" mark which contains dozens and dozens of links to blogs was gone. I have no idea why. I suppose I could have selected the Blog bookmark and delete at the same time. Or one of the cats wandered across the keyboard. They are very prone to do this. Plop, plop, plop. I then spent a half-hour trying to recover the backup bookmarks. But by now the bookmarks with the delete Blog listing was the latest backup. Crap! Usually, I have no trouble doing this, but I certainly managed to screw it up last night. And there may be a way to insert a single bookmark into the group, but I'm not sure what it is. So when you import the backup, you have doubles of everything. Double crap! None (Out - Monday - 20070618 - 2345) This entry was completed in a single sitting.
