contours provocations
journal - 2007-0320 - tue 2200 journal | archives | home | e-mail Pensive Guys - Tobey I've finally gotten back around to working on the pensive images section. As you may or may not remember or care, I've been though about a dozen iterations until I decided on the current format. Because of this format, I don't foresee any major changes; they would prove far too time-consuming and onerous. I've been working on Tobey Maguire and thought I'd share some of my findings. After looking at these images, he certainly seems to have a much wider range than I would of thought of before.
The stray strands of hair that flop across his forehead. The beginnings of an indifferent beard. He is lit from the left leaving the right very slightly in an almost moon-lit shadow.
His stare is almost transparent as though he were unaware of the camera which gives hims a striking sense of immediacy and intimacy
Not in a costume but a formal business suit with the cuffs of a white shirt revealed. I can't quite decide is there's a cufflink on the left arm of the shirt or not. The rims of his eyes appear to be ringed with kohl or mascara giving him a slightly otherworldly look. There also a hint of menace to his gaze. Or maybe a better word would a tinge of challenge. As though to say, "This is my territory. Why are you here?"
The hair is groomed. very slightly tousled without being foppish. Hair of great beauty.
Only his head, neck and shoulders are completely visible, only the very front of the rest of his body is visible. It's difficult to tell what he's wearing - Is it a costume or a tight sweater. In either case the colors are triangles of black, white and red. What comes to mind is the apparel for the jack of spades.
His hair is cropped short, and he wears a grim puzzled look and though he senses an interloper.
Only the right eye appears untouched. Again there are strands of stray air across his forehead. His gaze is one that is purely noncommittal, indifferent, unreadable, as though he was interrupted while musing.on a lamp flame.
Note the difference in the reflections of his eyes in the larger image.
It's a medium close up, so all you can see is that he is wearing a dark green tee. I'm guessing he may be sitting sideways in an armed chair with his left arm on the left arm of the chair, and his right arm across his right thigh. Only his right profile is lit, the left is almost totally in shadow. Again, there's an unshaven look, but this one looks more defined. But the most striking feature is the intense, probing glower of the right eye which is almost greenish, no doubt, because of the reflection of the green shirt. The glare of a wolf cub.
This images almost seems part photo/part painting. Especially the lips which trigger some long-ago forgotten image. These lips are like the petals of a rose bud - succulent and inviting.
The eyes are obsidian, devoid of any color or reflection. The hair has a hint of tousle, and his face is clean-shaven.
He appears world-weary, tired, almost apathetic. And of all the photos, he appears the saddest here.
Someone who wants to say "Get on with it!" It's also the first time his lower extremities have appeared. He almost seems to be disputing our image of him. Contradicting our vestal sexual image of him. Provoking our gaze toward his crotch.
If there can be such a thing as a "bad boy" image of Tobey, this is it. This would make the perfect poster for your bedroom wall.
He blankly looks toward someone in the seats below the stage. Someone giving instructions? His expressionless face reveals little, but the listless body language makes you think he's heard it all before. Or maybe he's not hearing any of it. His hands resemble claws. Does the jacket seem a little to big? And is the right cuff frayed, it looks like there are a couple of loose threads. The puppet baffles me. I've tried any number of tricks to make it more discernible to no avail. Could it be a Punch or Judy?
The shadow on the wall is beyond creepy. It appears disembodied with a twilight life of its own.
PAX! Erin Go Braugh!
