contours provocations
journal - 2006-0220 - mon 2100 Me and my laptop; Finances; Garage Sale, Gay Blogs As I click away here, I'm running ZoneAlarm's Antivirus scan in the background. I've reconfigured the system several times in the last few weeks, and frequently you're requested to turn off your firewall to install something or other. So I thought it might be a good idea to do a scan. There was also the recurring problem of ZoneAlarm being unable to update its antivirus descriptions. A problem which has now been solved. I've also noticed that whenever I boot up, the process seems to take an unusually long time. So I looked online until I found a site that tells you how to know what is being loaded. Under Start, open Run, type in msconfig. This gives you a run down of what's included in the INI files, which services are running, and what's included in the Startup. Many of the processes listed under Startup have name that don't tell you very much. So I opened a Google window, and looked up many of them. I was able to eliminate about a dozen processes. I also glanced at the services running section. First off, the listing is much longer than the one under Startup. But are they all necessary? I'll explore that on another day. I've still not solved the problem of being able to print via my wirelss network. The wireless router appears to receive the print signal. But that's as far as I can get. If I run the USB printer cable directly to the lap top, everything is fine. Another problem to explore another day. Just as I thought I had a handle on what I owe, a bill pops up from the attorney I consulted in June or July about trying to get mother qualified for Medicaid. That will be another debt that'll have to be added to the bankruptcy list. And there was also a note from the bank saying there were not enough funds in the joint account to pay back the earlier deposit made by the retirement system. (Remember, I got a letter from the retirement system two days after the funeral indicating they would seek repayment of the direct deposit of the retirement amount.) I didn't worry about this at first, since I stopped using the joint account. But then I remembered I'd written a check for the funeral expenses from that account. Fortunately, the day before the NSF notice, I'd deposited a check from a joint mutual fund account into the bank account. There should be one last check from AARP for her stay in the nursing home. And I've decided the prudent thing to do with that amount is to pay the bankruptcy attorney. Essentially it costs around $1,500 to file for Chapter 7. Or at least through an attorney. I suppose if you really knew what you were doing, you could do it yourself. But I certainly do not fall into that category. I'm slowly grouping items for the giant post bankruptcy estate sale. So far, I've got containers of phones, clocks, dishes, glasses, and pots and pans. And I've started on tools, sewing items, and decorative items. All these items are going into what used to be the den. Along with two recliners, three sofa chairs, a book case, two chests, a desk and an old cedar chest. My carport is now littered with a lawnmower, vacuum cleaner, plastic chairs, wooden chairs, an oak dinning table, two maple tables, six rugs, more tools, baskets and an ancient TV set. I've discovered I have to do all this slowly, or I began to become overwhelmed by it. And panic sets in. In my spare time, I've been wading through gay blogs looking for some that have substance. It's amazing how many look alike. I guess its the limitations of the blog service used. Blogspot and Typepad are used a lot. Eye candy seems to be fairly popular too. I've come across several that I remember from the past. And no doubt, I'll find more historical nuggets. PAX!
