Last Night; Lunch; Lunch Reading; Outside Kitties, Redux

Last Night

I feel tired this evening. On the weekend, I'm able to build up my sleep reservoir, but it begins to drain away after a couple of days. And my demented brain starts to fizzle.

No doubt, some of this derives from not going to sleep until around 1 this morning, or last night as you will. (Sounds like the name of a play, "Last Night As You Will.")

So when I don't sleep, and I don't feel like browsing the web or reading, I flop in front of the tv. So what did I discover last night? A reality show on E about performers in Las Vegas who are in a show called "Skintight." Among the participants are three guys, one of whom is gay. I didn't watch enough to understand very much. But I'll know to look for it in the future.

Lunch

My usual place for lunch is a nearby deli. There are about half-a-dozen in the chain in the metro area, and this one is the smallest, and the busiest at lunch. (All this according to the manager.) If I go there each day, then it's one less decision to make. Plus it is fairly inexpensive, and I love the ice tea.

The studly blue collar workers who pop up each day for a sandwich have nothing to do with my decision to eat there. Nor do the college guys catching a quick snack. Or the attractive business guys in suits. Or the solitary older man reading. Nope, none of these influence my decision in the least.

The deli is at a corner facing the parking lot with its back and side only a few feet from two busy streets. To the other side and front is a lane for incoming and outgoing traffic. To get out of the traffic, cars must enter quickly. But this means they are quickly in front of the deli. But to get to the deli, customers have to cut thorugh the lane. Meanwhile cars are trying to pull in and out of the parking sections, so there are moving vehicles in every direction.

If that was not bad enough, they are now re-paving the entire parking lot, Today, there was not one stripe to be seen. Cars everywhere. And I was sure I was going to be murdered by some homophobic Southern Belle in a SUV. (I can just hear her explanation, "That faggot deliberately stepped in front of my SUV. Look at the dent he made in my hood!")

Lunch Reading

Once inside I was able to grab a small table near the wall. I usually take a mag to read. Even if I'm more interested in boy watching, the mag makes a nice prop.

Today I had a copy of the May issue of "Architectural Record." It always reports on the latest trends in architecture and design. And so many of the buidlings it showcases are indeed remarkable. The cover piece was about the new undergraduate dorm, Simmons Hall, at MIT.

One report was especially fascinating to me. It was an article about the restoration of a 19th century synagogue in Krakow, Poland. The author indicated it survived WWII because the Nazis used it as a stable and a warehouse. That it survived for whatever reason is astounding. And it give me a tiny sense of joy.

Outdoor Kitties, Redux

When I pulled into the drive this evening, one of the outside kitties bounced down the drive and slipped through the back gate. I noticed it looked underfed. Once inside, I found a small microwave bowl and poured in a can of Friskies "Salmon Dinner in Gravy." Then I went back out and placed the bowl near the gate. After an hour or so, I glanced out, and a kitty with a fluffy grayish-white coat was nibbling away, About 45 minutes later, it began to rain, so I moved the bowl to my small back stoop. I'm sure that one or the other will find it.

PAX!
