"Clever hopes expire"; Ice Cubes; Doing Dune; The White Ark

I sit in one of the dives
On Fifty-Second Street
Uncertain and afraid
As the clever hopes expire
Of a low dishonest decade:
Waves of anger and fear
Circulate over the bright
And darkened lands of the earth,
Obsessing our private lives;
The unmentionable odour of death
Offends the September night.
"September 1, 1939"
W. H. Auden
An uncertain and unnerving day it was. It is impossible to escape the impending havoc of war. This afternoon I actually had to post a notice on the corporate web site indicating that services might be altered due to war. A scary thought. And I kept thinking of Auden's poem about the invasion of Poland by Germany - an event that triggered WWII.
I've been watching "The Children of Dune" on the SciFi channel. The second in the channel's Dune chronology. A first-class production with some of the most elaborate sets I've ever seen. Or they may be simulations. Not the easiest story line to follow. Although I must admit that I found it easier going than the first set which totally baffled me.

And there are several performers that attack my imagination. But I'm not familiar with them. The actor playing Leto is very sexy in an unassuming way. Not the typical bulky action figure; lithe, slender, almost slight. With the barest hint of an undefined accent. And he spends most of the last hour wearing only pants. Fine by me!

Yesterday, I stopped at the post office at lunch. As I was leaving, I noticed an elderly lady getting into a gorgeous pearl gray Lexus parked next to my very dirty Saturn. I casually commented that it was a beautiful color. She said, "Thank You." And then immediately started telling me about it. Then she exclaimed, "It even comes with a refrigerator!" I stood there with my mouth open. "Oh, let me show you." She opened the back door and indicated a number of features. Then she leaned over and pulled down the middle arm rest, and like magic, there was a tiny unit with ice cubes.

In a way, I felt like I'd done my good deed for the day. For she sppeared very appreciative of the comment. I always try to gauge my audience before throwing out compliments. Most of the time, people looked pleased. But I'm waiting for the psycho who thinks I'm the reincarnation of Rasputin. And tries to decapitate me with a plastic spoon.

For the past couple of months when I return from lunch to work, I've noticed a boat in someone's backyard. But this is no simple canoe or rowboat. It appears to be made of wood panels and painted solid white. Even though there is a fence, the jutting bow appears is much taller. The ship isat least the length of the house and must be about 15 feet wide.

Every time I see it, I think of Noah's ark. It definitely has the same type of design. But I've not been able to see an entrance ramp. And I keep wondering what the builder knows that I don't.

PAX!
