contours provocations
journal - 2002-1229 - sun 1730 Warriors; The Elf; Naked on Ice Another day, not unlike yesterday. After stumbling out of bed the morning, the first thing I did was to read an article in issue 911 of "Rolling Stone." About the "eco-terrorist" Tre Arrow. I'd glanced at the article last night, but wanted to read it more slowly. The story of a environmental activist who has become an eco-warrior and a fugitive from the law. A couple of days ago, I caught the end of "Another Mother's Son" on cable. The history of the Belfast hunger strikers of the early 80s starring Helen Mirren as the mother of one of the strikers. A key part of the story was the strike by Bobby Sands, who though jailed was elected to Parliment, and died for his beliefs. One of the British government officials remarked that the events were a complete disaster for the Tories. And that the official policies failed to consider the impact of martyrs in the Irish - English ethos. And indeed there have been many, before and after Irish independence. As I read the Arrow article, I kept thinking of the the similarity of the overall events and the government's response. RS in the article also examined the impact of the Earth Liberation Front. The magazine interviewed Craig Rosebraugh, who acts as a face for the ELF. And RS shares some of his thoughts. "...he said he had become convinced that revolutions took place only when pacifists committed to aboveground civil disobedience were backed by militants who accomplished underground acts of violence." At the very least, that is an intriguing axiom. That could easily apply to the Pacific northwest or Belfast. On the subject of elves - how about that for a seque. I also went on the web this morning looking for photos of Orlando Bloom. And in following links, I discovered that Orlando has recently completed a bizarre independent film in which he is nude most of the time. I won't even attempt to explain the plot, because I'm not sure I understood what I read. You'll need to visit "Deed Poll". If you follow some of the various links, you'll also discover that it may be a hoax. Obviously, I'm not sure about this. This afternoon, I stopped at Barnes and Noble to look for books by David Sedaris for use as a birthday gift. I walked away with "Christmas on the Rocks" and "Naked." Oppppsssss. That's not right, the title is actually "Holidays on Ice." (Not a bad guess though.) "Holidays" contains his saga of working as an Elf at Macy's. Although funny to read, it lacks the punch of Sedaris' phrasing you note when you hear him recite it. (Crap! If I'd had any sense, I should have checked for audio versions.) Enough. PAX!
