contours provocations
journal - 2002-1216 - mon 2000 Taken; Shop; Elven Ears; Melted Heart Two weeks ago, I was kidnapped by aliens. In a metaphorical sort of way. Actually I was taken by the SciFi channel's epic "Taken." The story of three generations of people and their involvement with aliens and abductions. Two hours a night for ten days. I was very impressed with the beginning, but as it progressed, it became a tad too familiar. UFOs and such have always been a puzzle to me. To believe or not to believe? There have been enough odd events in the skies to make one at least curious. Especially when the sightings have been by reliable individuals. So, I'm keeping an open mind. The first episode touched on events that were new to me. Sightings by American pilots in WWII. And even some abductions. I've done most of the customary seasonal shopping. I still need that special gift for a friend. Most likely, I'll pick a book from Amazon. One of those devoted to the male nude form. Until this evening, I'd forgotten that I've done that for the last two years. I hate to break with tradition. Saturday, the shoppers were out in full force. I wanted to go the nearest WalMart which is across from the mall. I tried the direct route, but the traffic was bumper to bumper for at least a mile. Next I tried the back route, but that was even worse. Finally, I gave up and came home. That evening, a friend and I had din din, and we were able to slip into Barnes and Noble and then trek over to Best Buy. He got a couple of DVDs as gifts, and I grabbed "The Lord of The Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring - Special Extended DVD Edition." The movie edition had come out in August, but this version, only recently released, has extra footage. Footage that has been incorporated into the story, rather than being placed separately. I quibbled about buying it. But after viewing the first few minutes, I knew it was worth it. It is a spectular achievement of movie making. Every touch seems just right. As when I saw it in the theatre, I was struck by the emotional intensity. And by the homoerotic undertones of the "band of brothers." This is something, I'd not thought of as I read the books. Of course, it does not hurt that I find all the performers very attractive. Especially Orlando Bloom and Viggo Mortensen. I could not take my eyes off Orlando's elven ears and blond hair. Or Viggo's chisled brow. This morning, I stopped for my customary large coke and two butter biscuits. Ahead of me was someone I would easily want to be abducted with. Balding with closely cropped salt-and-pepper hair. Pale skin that no amount of sun would tan. A nose worthy of placement of a Roman coin. Battered Nikes. Faded denim jeans. A navy sweatshirt with light blue words. And a cheap-looking black "leather" jacket. An easy smile. I even noticed a slight bumb on the back of his neck. As I ambled outside, I slowed to be able to watch him walk to his car with his cup of coffee. His pace was casual but definite. As though he was self-assured but not overbearing. It was like one of those adolescent moments when you catch sight of the new boy at school, and your heart melts. PAX!
