"Wind Talkers"

Here it is Friday. A week of bits and pieces. Which more or less means that nothing extraordinary happened. Or if it did, I don't remember it.

I really must figure out a way to keep track of things I encounter during the day. They appear enticing at the time, but I can't recall anything several hours later.

There's a new movie coming out in a week or so - "Wind Talkers." It's about the use of Navajos in WWII as code talkers. At the time there were very few individuals outside the tribe who could speak the language. It was also essentially a verbal language without an alphabet or written form. (The creation of both is a relatively recent event.)

I guess if you're a nomadic people with an emphasis on living in harmony with the earth, there is little need for writing. Certainly at odds with the current American scene. So for the last several days, I've been reading on and off the net about the tribe, the language and the code talkers.

Along these lines, one day this week, I bought the new Tony Hillerman book - "The Wailing Wind." The main suit of his books is atmosphere. And he always creates that superbly. The bonus here is a wonderful map on the inside cover that shows part of the four-corners area.

PAX!
