contours provocations
journal - 2002-0514 - tue 2230 "I've Had a Bite." Gads! After a week of being unwell, I've managed to make it through two days at work. But I've felt very, very tired. At the collapse of the day, I run home and end. Saturday, I went back and saw Spider-Man, all the way through this time. First off, Tobey Maguire is wonderful. He is perfect as a nerdy teen who realizes the significance and responsibility of power. To be honest, I enjoyed the first part more than the second. You watch him as he begins to understand what he has become. And there's a great sense of joy in that discovery. The second part is more concerned with events that must lead to the ultimate conflict with a super villian - The Green Goblin. Of course, this is the standard plot for all tales of a super hero. There's only so much you can do when a hero has to combat ordinary mortals. You have to give the hero a suitable "dark force" to face. I love the tiny scene near the beginning, after he's just been bitten, when he bounces down the stairs, and suddenly flings himself into the corner of the stairwell. For a big splashy movie, it has a lot of these small moments that reveal the soul of Spidey. Tonight was the last episode of "Roswell." A show I loved the first season. Alas, that it lost its way. This season it was opposite "Smallville," which was a much superior production. But in a way, I'm a little sad to see it go. All for this episode. PAX!
