contours provocations
journal - 2001-0706 - fri 2000 I encounter a butterfly; I receive boxes; I listen to music; I play with web radio Another starry night of fitful sleep. Not until after 2 did I drift off. A not unusual story, alas. And another day of feeling pressed. Not quite as bad as yesterday but still tiresome. As I waited at a traffic light on my way to lunch, a gold and orange butterfly scampered across the hood of my car followed by a smaller yellow one. For a second, I thought they were going to light on my car, but they darted away and were quickly gone. It was as if they were playing a game of tag and wished not to tarry. But for a fleeting moment, they filled the heated air of summer with beauty. As you may remember, last week I ordered three CDs: "Officium" by the Hilliard Ensemble - which contains the piece, "Parce Mimi Domino" used at the end of the finale of QAFWhen I got home yesterday, there were two Amazon boxes on my back steps: the big box contained the CDs; the smaller, a book. When I noticed them, I was sure it would be the other way around. Amazon uses something I'd never seen before for packing. Small clear air bags called polyair. These must have been designed with the boxes in mind for they fit exactly. And they are a perfect solution for people who hate those damn styrofoam "peanuts." And they allow the same size box to be used for many different items. Today my other two books arrived. (Book details.) Also in a box the same size as the one from yesterday that held the CDs. BUT no cute little polyair bags this time. The books were shrink wrapped to a cardboard sheet. (By the way, the cats love the two boxes. They're a perfect fit for 4 of the 5. Daddy cat is a tad too hefty to squeeze in. If he does manage to squeeze in that will be the end of the box.) Last night i tried listening to "Officium," but I was so zonked that I couldn't appreciate it. This evening's listen was much better. But I need to try earphones for the full effect. I made it through "Parce Mimi Domino," without tears, but immediately started weeping at the start of the next cut. I can not hear "Parce" without envisioning Justin's shattered body being removed from the ambulance in QAF. I've been playing with web audio channels at work. I tried several "new age" options, but they proved a wee bit too "easy listening" for my workday sentiments. I keep coming back to 3WK, alternative, which has many virtues. But I've noticed, they are guilty of a rotating playlist. I'd like a more free-form approach. I suppose I need to re-visit the station in New Jersey, the name of which escapes me. As I recall though, they were so free-form that even I thought some of the stuff was weird. PAX!
