Buffy; 2001; Dirt; Gorky

According to the newspaper, "Buffy" is moved to UPN with an order of 44 episodes for $102 million. MERCY! "The little program that could."

Yesterday, when I went wandering in the outside world, I stopped at B&N and bought a paperback sci-fi novel, a copy of "Metro" and a copy of "Cinefex." I don't recall having seen the last publication before, but what caught my eye was a wonderful cover showing a scene from "2001." The shot is the one where Bowman has just exited the "Discovery" in one of the pods to check the AE-35 unit that HAL has indicated is going to malfunction.

There is a long, detailed article about the making of "2001." Lots of photos showing a behind the scenes look. Knowing what a control freak Kubrick was, I'm surprised he allowed the photos to be taken. Or to survive. Especially since he ordered that all the models be destroyed.

Early afternoon, I traipsed off to have fish and chips at "Captain D's" but switched to cajun shimp and chips instead. A tad too spicy for my taste buds.

After sating myself with shrimp, I decided to drive north on the Interstate to see what was what. The first mile or so is marked by some heavy-duty construction having to do with the revamping of some interchanges. There is a section in which the road narrows into a bobsled-like course demarked by movable concrete barricades that appear to be six inches from your car. About this time is when you look in the review mirror and see a giant semi a couple of feet from your back bumper.

A new auto plant is to be built several miles further north. This was my initial visit since preparation has started. I knew it was to be big, but I had no idea it would be so HUGH. HUGHER. HUGHEST! Cranes. Trucks. Bulldozers. Dirt, dirt, dirt. All this I expected. But the smell was definitely a novelty! Fecund would be an understatement.

QAF calls to me. Funniest line so far. Brian is trolling at the baths. Someone at a door calls to him and sez something along the lines of what's going on. Brian replies, "I was reading Gorky, and I wanted something from 'The Lower Depths'."

PAX!
