"Survivor"; QAF; VF; Dr. Laura; Books for a dollar

"Survivor"

"Survivor" finished a few minutes ago. It definitely is "Real World" in the jungle. I had often wondered if the whining and bitchiness of "Real World" was due to the age of the participants. Now, I know it was not. The "Survivor" members, who range in age from 20s to 60s, appear to be just as cantankerous; in some ways, even more so. Maybe it has more to do with the format that accentuates the "dramatic."

Ads were on for something called "Big Brother" coming up in July. A group is confined to a house for x number of days. I've read that these shows are variations of programs from Sweden or Norway and the UK. (Or at least I think that is right.) I'm also reminded of what I've seen of those inane Japanese game shows.

Incidentally, one of the "Survivor" folks outed himself this evening. Very much the papa-bear-type.

One of the computer rags I read said so many people tried to access the "Survivor" web site that is crashed. I tried three or four times over the weekend, and it froze my laptop every time.

QAF

The June 20th copy of "The Advocate" has an ad for C1tv, the cable channel that has the exclusive US rights to "Queer as Folk." Obviously, they are hoping that QAF will create a niche market for them. Check www.c1tv.com for details.

VF

And another front, "Vanity Fair" (May) had a photo of someone that caught my eye when I first skimmed the issue. I came back to the article yesterday and discovered he was gay and staff secretary to President Clinton. He and his partner adopted a ten-year-old boy who was the neglected child of two drug addicts with AIDS. He mentions that the president sent them a letter saying, "Dear Mr. and Dear Mr.: Congratulations on your adoption."

Dr. Laura

Someone I used to work with sent me a great letter she had received that poses some questions to Dr. Laura. See Dr. Laura.

Books for a dollar

Yesterday, I slipped by "Books A Million" to check for gay mags. Found a copy of the April "attitude." (What has been going on at "Books" that requires a roving security guard? INSIDE the store! Strange!) On my way out, I stopped at one of the sales tables - $1 books. The big find was "America's Garden Book" with over a 1000 pages and a retail price of $65 for only $1!. Amazing!
