contours provocations
journal - 1999-0920 - mon 2000 journal | archives | home | e-mail Fog, GaGa, bills, net addict, Duchess of Windsor This morning in the shower, I looked out the window to find fog. Not the fog of "little cat's feet," but something more akin to unrepentant haze. As I was driving to work, there were almost invisible dots of moisture on the windshield. The phrase "Chanel sprayed through gauze" came to mind. Everything disappeared above fifty feet up, and even some of the lights along the Interstate were still lit. Morning at work went smoothly. I especially like it when I can get something off my desk and unto someone else's desk. Tried Radio GoGaGa via MediaPlayer, and it worked for several hours without a hitch. GoGaGa does not have the best audio quality; I've discovered other Net stations with far better sound quality. It may be the mad mix of genres on GaGa that is the culprit. A Woody Guthrie piece recorded in the '30s is not going to sound as good as something by the Beastie Boys recorded two years ago. I left early for lunch, so I could scoot to the credit union. For the third month in a row, I've screwed up by bank balance. I get ready to pay a bill, and realize I don't have enough in the bank. Jeeez! What is my problem? The credit union is in the Capitol complex: a series of buildings devoted to the necessities of state government. The worst problem is parking. An entire block has been razed over the years to create one large ugly parking lot. Even then, it is still very difficult to find a space. But I was lucky, I found one between two cop cars that turned out to belong to the Public Service Commission. Why would the PSC need trooper cars? Puzzling? Stopped by the PO before lunch to check my box. The phone bill was there. I must have one of THE most complicated phone bills in the world - 10 pages. I have measured service, which means you are charged for every minute the line is in use, but there is a cap of $15. (PAUSE) I was wondering how many minutes it was last month, so I did some adding and came up with 5,841! That's over 97 hours! Am I a Net junkie or not? Is there a 12-step program for wired addicts? Holy call waiting! A lot of that is work related, because I telenet to the server rather than FTP. I was talking this morning with someone about the Miss America pageant. Although, I have no interest, I knew that several were handicapping the event. Some how the conversation led to Joan River's pre-Emmy fashion analysis on E! I made the comment that I thought that she looked good for someone pushing 70. There was a retort about her face having been lifted several times. I then quoted the great line about the Duchess of Windsor, who was reputed to have had more than a few chin pulls. "If she has one more face lift, she'll wind up with a moustache!" PAX!
