The Attack on America

The following are some of my 8th graders' responses to the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. They were written the day after the attacks. I believe they provide exceptional insight into the sensitivity, intelligence, and patriotism of our young people today.

The Attack on America
A  Poem by Matt Holmes
Sumrall 8th grade

I thought I closed my eyes to see fantasy and dreams
But I only close my eyes to get away from the hatred.
I can't take everything that's happening, cause it's happening a little too fast.

I worry more about my family dying more than myself 'cause
My family is more important to me, more than anybody else.
It's funny how long it takes you to reach a dream and how fast
It can get taken away. I find myself in my room asking will everything
Be o.k.

I close my eyes no longer to see fantasy and dreams. I close my eyes to get away
From the fact that this could happen to me.

The Attack on America
By Tara Whitehead

Yesterday, September 11, 2001, was a horrific day in America history. Airplanes hit both the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. This caused massive destruction and also thousands of lives. I believe that whoever did this to our nation must have had hate, disgust, and evil implanted in their hearts. These terrorists will pay one way or another, either in their next their next life or once America gets hold of whoever committed this horrible act of hate upon our country.
As I was sitting in my desk at school yesterday, I couldn’t seem to grasp or comprehend the fact that this incident had occurred. Now, since I’ve heard many of the details, I am beginning to understand the whole situation. I am only worried for the families of the victims and for our country, as we grieve together. I’m afraid that there is much more heartache to come. I hope that the people driven to do this evil act by the hatred in their own hearts can feel sorrow and sympathy for our nation.
We can only pray for the victims and their families today. I pray that God may have mercy upon the terrorists’ souls. Our great nation will heal in time with God watching over us. Our nation is strong enough to heal, to reconstruct, and to punish the murderers of the thousands of people who perished. The wonderful hand of God will be over us today, just like it always has been.

THE ATTACK ON AMERICA

September 13 our country was attacked. Four American passenger planes were hijacked, two of which were crashed into the World Trade Center. One also hit the Pentagon. Almost eight hours later, two other buildings collapsed not far from the Twin Towers.
When I first heard about this horrendous event, I felt like a character in a movie. I couldn’t believe it was true, but the sad thing is that it was. I don’t even know how to act in this situation. I fear that this may result in a war, and that means that people I am close to could be injured or maybe even die. Nothing like this has ever happened in my lifetime.
I am a strong believer in God and believe that if you were ever to ask for his help, now would be the time. IN GOD WE TRUST is imprinted on every U.S. coin, and that is what we must do now. We must trust the fate of the victims and the victim’s families, the rescue efforts, and our entire nation to God. We should continue to pray and do anything that we can to help those who have been affected so greatly by this tragedy. GOD BLESS AMERICA!

Sean's Story
By Sean Levesque

Yesterday when I had woken up for school everything was exactly the same as any other day, except for the fact that my mom was going to work. She is a flight attendant who flies to places like New York and Washington, D.C.
I got up, took a shower, and got ready for school. When I got everything together, my mom drove me to school. After I got to school, I went into the band hall, like I always do and got ready to play. I play the saxophone in the high school band.
When I got to my second period class and sat down, I started to talk to my friends. When the bell rang, my teacher wasn’t the same happy man like he always was. When he got the class's attention, he told us that this morning two planes had crashed into the World Trade Center towers, and another had crashed into the Pentagon. The first thought that come to my mind was about my mom and that she was going to work today.
Thirty minutes into the class I was going crazy. Then the intercom came on.  The secretary had called me up to the office. When I was walking down the hall, everything went through my mind. Could my mom have died? Is she okay? I hope so. When I got to the office, my brother was in there. They told us that our mom was okay. She had not gone to work. I was so scared, but it was a sign for me to be more careful about my life.

When I first heard about the attack, I just felt numb. My first thought was, “Oh my gosh! What about our president?”  The next thing I remember, I was going to second period. Since then I have been going through life I’m in a dream. I want to wake up, but I know I can’t. I still feel numb. It seems like there are no emotions going through me. I want to make it all go away. I’m afraid of going to war, but I now believe that there is no price too high for freedom. Like the revolutionist said, “Give me liberty or give me death!” And we who may be left behind while the soldiers go to war must keep the faith. Our nation needs to get back to God and trust Him. When we are fighting for His cause and in His will, we will be invisible and nothing or no one will be able to stop us.
The main way we can help is to pray, pray for our leaders and the decisions they make. We can donate blood and money.  We can back our president 100%. We can also try to forgive the people who did this.

Yesterday, September 11, 2001, terrorists declared war on the United States of America.  Four planes were hijacked within thirty minutes of each other. Two of the planes were used to take down the world trade business centers. Another plane was crashed into the walls of the Pentagon. The fourth plane was shot down in Pennsylvania.
I first found out about this in Mrs. Jennifer Clark's computer discovery class. I was slightly worried, but I was not too concerned. I don’t think many of us were sure just how serious this was. We talked about all of this off an on all day long with me still not seeing just how bad all of this was.
When I got home it finally hit me. I was watching all the t.v. reports. The severity of all the attacks were finally sinking in. Then I realized that this could possibly result in a war. Ever channel on the television had these report, when you turned on the radio they were discussing the details also.   Everyone was talking about the terrorist attacks.
This hit our nation so bad many places began to shut down. For the first time in the history of our country there were no planes in the sky. All of our airports everywhere were shut down. Everyone fled to the gas stations trying to fill their tanks in case they were going to shut down to. Some people said Sumrall didn’t have to worry because it is a small place. But we do. We have two major places they could attack with a reason. Collins has a major oil and gasoline company. Camp Shelby could also be considered for attack. There was a cause for worry at Sumrall not just for our nations but of the threats nearby.
I pray to God that this terrible tragedy doesn't result in war. We all can help our country when it needs us most. We all can also help support others who have lost loved ones as well as other things to help to cope with their losses. This is a time we should stay together as “One Nation Under God.”

I predict the attack on America will bring our country down. We are always used to having it so easy. Sometimes I wonder what it would be like to live in one of those small poor countries. I understand that this would not make us go into poverty or anything. I just don’t think we will be the top nation anymore.  I guess we will just have to wait and see.
I don’t think it was right for them to bomb us. I understand Muslims hate Christians. If they left us alone I think they would have been a lot better off. I don’t know this for a fact, but chances are we have better missiles. This is why I think they should not have bombed us.
I disagree with another thing too. I don’t think just because they came over here and rammed us, we need to go over there and go see how many bombs we can drop on them! They are both wrong for doing that.  All I can say is what will happen, will happen. What God wants to happen, will happen.

I can’t believe this has happened. I never thought it would in my lifetime.
I can’t help but think of all those people who didn’t go home to a family. In 2nd period when Mrs. Jennifer Clark told us I went into shock. I thought Mrs. Clark was going to cry. We were all scared. Now we might go to war! A lot of my friends will have to go defend our country. I hope that we can settle this but if we can’t I don’t know what will happen. I worry that more bad things will happen. The way that teenagers can help is by praying. God knows what he’s doing. He’s in control. I believe if we pray God will listen and answer our prayers. God will protect us.
This is a dramatic thing. Some people didn’t take it seriously at first. I hope they do now! This is very serious. I’m glad we have a strong force. We need not only to pray for our country but for the people who lost someone. I know what it’s like to lose someone. It’s not anything you would want to go through. To know that they were murdered has got to hurt. Some people don’t even know yet. It’s a very wrong terrible thing.

Attacks on America

Tuesday, September 11, 2001, the U.S. was attacked at the World Trade Center and our nation's Pentagon. I couldn’t believe that someone would actually kill so many people. Over 5,000 people died at the trade center and 800 more died at the Pentagon. Can you imagine kissing your parents goodbye on an ordinary Tuesday morning and then the next thing you know they are lying breathless in a heap of still burning rubbish? This surprises and devastates me to know that there are still people that are alive and screaming, crying for help but nobody can hear or get to them. I think the worst thing would not be knowing if a loved one was dead, but wondering if they were.
My friend’s father plans to go to New York to help clean and clear away the debris from the tragedy. I personally don’t want him to go, because if anything happened to him I know they would be devastated. Tuesday night, while watching the news, my mother and I realized how lucky we are to be living in Sumrall, MS.
I am also extremely happy and proud to know Jesus as my personal savior. All the guns, men, and cannons in the world couldn’t stop His plan or his love for us. I think we as a nation seem to forget that sometimes and take our freedom for granted. We, as teenagers, the only thing we can do is to put this in God’s hands. Prayer is the only medicine for all the pain that has hit our country. Our world is most definitely changing, and it is up to us whether it is for the better or the worse.

Well, it was pretty bad! They had some pretty bad clips of people jumping to their death!
I hope we don't go to war! I hope the people who lost loved ones take it o.k. I think it was Bin Laden guy. I know God will put His guiding hands on George Bush's shoulders. I know how it is to lose somebody you love, so I can relate to the people in New York and Washington. I think we should bomb the Middle Eastern countries, though if I remember correctly, I thought I heard that the man behind this was hiding out in Afghanistan, and they said they would do everything to locate and bring forth Bin Laden. As a teen, I don't think there is really much we can do but pray.

I think what happened to us is very sad. I don’t know why anyone would want to hurt our country. I think that it probably was Bin Laden.
I was very sad when I heard about what had happened. I was also very shocked. My friends were talking about it but it was hard to believe. Then it hit me. I thought about how in the Bible talks about the last days. I had heard my mom talking about all the signs, and I know that this is one of them. All we can do is pray that God will help our country fight back and protect ourselves. I am a little less afraid now than what I was because I know that God is with us and that he will protect us no matter what. I am still very sad and my heart goes out to the people that lost their innocent lives and their families. I am extremely sad because of all the children that are without parents right now. I pray that God will help those children find peace in their hearts and to forgive the mean people that took their parents away from them.
I’m worried that the terrorists could be somewhere in Mississippi. That could be possible because whenever I’m in Wal-Mart I see people with white cloths that look like towels over their head. They looked like the people that they were showing on the news that were cheering when we got attacked. As I said I pray and hope that we will not go into war. If we do, I pray that we will have enough men and weapons to gain victory over our enemies. I also pray that they will not have to draft anyone into the military because there isn’t enough. I pray that the President will have the knowledge to stay calm and to find out who the terrorists are and how to punish them.
All I can say for us teens is to do now is to pray for the families that lost loved ones now that the terrorists have done what they wanted to do. We should also pray that everyone will stay safe.

When I first heard about it, I was scared and shocked. My teacher Mrs. Jennifer Clark told us what was going on. At first my mind did not want to believe it, but when I thought about it for a second, it hit me like nothing has ever hit me before. I never thought that I would have to go through something so tragic, but I guess things come unexpectedly.
Everyone was panicking. They started filling their gas up and buying a lot of groceries. In our world we need world peace and not danger for all little kids or grown ups to have to go through. Why would someone do something that hateful to innocent Americans? I could see if they had done something wrong, but no one did anything for these people to have committed such a harmful crime.
The United States is the best and one and only. I think that Afghanistan should let Bin Laden go and let him pay for his crime that he committed. It is pretty obvious that he did it because he said we would have a surprise coming. I just think that the world should stay a safe place for the next generation.

I would like to know who was behind this...or what country was behind it. Or if we are going to war with another country. I also think it was a very cruel act. Why would someone want to kill so many people? They probably didn’t do anything wrong to deserve that kind of fate.

Yesterday morning, a terrible tragedy happened. It took place in New York City and Washington, D.C., but it had an effect on the whole nation. I think a total of seven buildings fell, and tens of thousands of people lost their lives.
I have mixed feelings. When I first heard the news, I was filled with despair, sadness, and fear. It upsets me most to know that so many people lost their lives because of someone else’s cold-hearted hatred.
I believe when America finds out who committed this horrible sin, we will show no mercy towards them. We will retaliate and show them that the United States is the greatest nation in the world, and broken buildings will not cause us to surrender to anyone or anything.
I have to admit that I am very worried over this. If there is another attack, it could be closer to us. Someone told me the stock market was closed which means our economy has hit rock bottom. There could be an inflation of prices or a shortage of supplies, if we decide to go to war.
I hope that the families of the victims can somehow find peace within their hearts. I also hope we can start reconstructing what has been damaged and in some way find the strength to go on as a nation.
I am not a doctor, nor a firefighter, so I couldn’t be of much help in actually going through the rubble. However, I can continue to pray for the families of the victims and for our nation as a whole. We could also send our condolences through email or snail mail. I know we can pull through this if we put our faith in God.

My thought or opinions are I hope that some people are safe. We need to pray for those people who have death. It is hard for those people to go through this. We want to know who did this and we maybe need to go get them.
My feelings for them are they will always be in my prayers and I know how hard it is. I really feel sorry about all of this. When I first about was from Mrs. Clark. She showed her students a picture on the Internet and it was awful.
My worries are some friends have family and I hope they are o.k. My hopes are the people that are alive, are safe, and the students at the school, and they’re in a safe place. I hope they told their parents where they were going instead of letting them worry. I think that none of us teens can help, but we can pray. God is the only way to help people to be safe. We can’t even get down there because theirs to many people but its dangerous. I really hope God can help them if they’re dead or alive because we know where they are going-- to Heaven.

When I first heard about the attack, I really didn’t understand what was going on. Now I do and my heart has been broken. I never thought something like this could happen to America, now I know it can happen and I am upset. Questions have been going through my head like how could they do this? Did the terrorists even care if those thousands of innocent lives were taken?
Tuesday afternoon around 6:00 o'clock I sat on my couch from an emotional day when I turned on the television to see people from a different country celebrating about what happened. Tears started to fill up my eyes. All I could think about was the victims' loved ones and how they felt about someone celebrating their loved ones being dead. I will never be able to lie in bed at night again thinking nothing will happen to America.
“But I’m still thankful to live here were at least I know I’m free. I won’t forget the man who dies who gave that right to me. “
I wish I could ask the people who did this why? But I know I can't. So I will put trust in the Lord that everything will be ok. I hope this all will end. It's like I am having a nightmare, and I can't wake up. When will this end?

I think the attack is horrible and it is unnecessary. When I heard about the attack I did not think about it at all, but after a while it started to sink in. I am worried now because you never know what’s going to happen, but now it seems like I can not get my mind off what could happen in the next few days, months, and maybe even years.
As a teen I think there is nothing I can do to help except pray and trust in God. I cannot understand why this had to happen because none of this is worth it. I do not understand why people have to do such horrible things to be seen and heard. My opinion is that all of this nonsense needs to end, and everyone needs to get along. I hope everything is going to be o.k. In fact, I know everything is going to be o.k. because God is going to make a way.

I think it’s so stupid that we have some people that won’t get out there and help fight for our country and freedom. But I also hate that we might have to go to war. Why can’t people just leave each other alone and let people believe what they want?
I do feel sorry for all those people who lost all their loved ones in the catastrophes. But we don’t have to worry about them anymore, I know we will miss them, but just think their in HEAVEN with GOD, having a big feast laughing and enjoying HEAVEN. I can just imagine they’re watching over us with GOD waiting for us to one day meet again.
When I first heard what had happened, I was so shocked I didn’t know what to or what to say. The way I fill now I could cry. I’m worried something might happen like I might get split away from my family, or everyone die and I’m alone. I hope this will all be over soon and we can have peace. We can help by giving things or signing up for war or army. I wonder where I’ll be when I die.

I think those people are dumb. I just say that we need to go bomb them. I think we should just go bomb all of those little Middle Eastern countries because if we don’t, they will keep doing this to America. If we don’t take this in our own hands, they will keep doing this stupid stuff to us. I think President Bush knows who it is, but is just taking a little while and then is going to bomb them. My personal opinion is that we should go wipe all of the Middle Eastern countries off of the map.
Personally, I think it was the Bin Laden guy. I say we go find him and make him suffer for all of the stuff he has done to America. We need to go kill him and take all of his money and divide it between the families who have lost loved ones. We intercepted 2 of his calls the other night and he was saying they had hit two American targets. So that means that the Pentagon was not meant to be hit. So where was that plane going? There are so many questions to be answered.
Germany and France have called to tell us that they would take up all of our slack. It’s good to know that not everybody hates us. Some of the other countries around the world have called to tell us that they are sorry that this has happened to us. I think if we had to go to war about this, we have several countries on our side. I think we would win, too. They don’t have as much technology as we do, so I think we would win because almost all they have is some rocks and some homemade knives.
When I first heard about this tragedy I was in 2nd period, and Mrs. Jennifer Clark told me that two planes had run into our WTC. When I first heard I was devastated; but, as the day went on and the more I was around my friends, I got better.
Bin Laden told us about a month ago that they had a surprise coming for the United States. All this time we have been trying to put the pieces together. Now we have found out what it was, and I’m sure that President Bush will have a surprise for them also. The date that this happened on was 9/11, and if you haven’t noticed yet, that means "911." They also took our airplanes just to make us mad because on the side of them it simply says, “UNITED WE STAND.”  I think that guy will pay for all the stuff he has done.
I think America will remember that day forever, and just keep your faith in God because he is the only one who can pull us through this one.

The Attack on America

This is a sad time for America, but I don't think we should be thinking about who did this and a way to fight back, but a way to rebuild our country. We should think about a way to lose all the hate we have in the world, a way to come together and be one. This will only pull us closer together, not push us away from each other. We need to stop saying stuff like, "That's them, not us. Let them fight for themselves." But we should fight for each other. God put us on this each as a community, to work together, to help each other when we need it.
What happened to America on September 11, 2001 should be an example to the world, an example of all the hate we have in the world. The reason the terrorists attacked our country is because they hate America because of what their people died and are dying for. I want to know everything and why? What have we done to them to hate us so much? How many people have to die before the world gets the picture that hatred will kill all the people in the world that we haven't lost already?
So this should set an example to what terrorists can do to the world.
On September 11, 2001 a tragic attack occurred in America. At 7:42 am a high jacked plane crashed in the World Trade Center. One of the twin towers. At 8:00 am the second hijacked plane crashed into the second twin. I think whoever did this should pay for all the pain and trouble they put us and everyone else through in these past few days. I hope they find guilt in their hearts for all the pained families, friends, parents, and kids, especially.

My feelings-- I’m very sorry to all the people that died and to their families to because this does not come over day of the year. I hope God is taking care of them up there and looking down on us.
I really don’t know how many people feel about this at all. I know one she said that we are going to die. I said we are not going to die. Just let us go through and see what is going to happen. If we do go to war, I don’t what I’m going to do. I’m going to be very sad because my uncle that has to go to the war and other men have to go too from other families. All the people are going to be very sad if something happens to the men if they have to go to war.
There is something we did for the people on the Internet.  We put ourselves on "busy" and on "coffee break" to show we care a lot about them.
I hope GOD is looking over us right now. Please help all of us. Thank You.

I think that what they did was wrong because all of the people that had families don’t any more. It is just a sad thing that has happened to all the people who have passed away. I just can't get over why they were willing to kill their own people for that idiotic reason. I don’t think that was a good idea to kill thousands of people for that. It was just plain out wrong and that is what I think about that.
But why would they want to do that? They were risking there own lives for that. I am starting to worry about if they will bomb Camp Shelby because it is the biggest camp in the country. I am just hoping that nothing happens. I thought that we had a secure country.

What I see
For years when I looked at my country
I saw a great nation with a safe and secure
Environment.  A place where my hopes and dreams
could come true. Now I look at my country in
disbelief. Some days ago
I was happy to live in my country,
but now I don’t know what to think,
I don’t know what to do.
When I first heard of the attack
I felt scared, worried, and shocked. I want to feel the way
I did before the attack-- safe, secure, and happy.
I hope to real soon return to
the great nation
we were once before.
