Walt Disney scores big with their remake of the 1949 Willis O'Brien/Merian Cooper classic Mighty Joe Young. Disney's Mighty Joe Young stars Charlize Theron as Jill Young, daughter of a noted primate scientist who befriends an unusual gorilla she names "Joe". Jill and Joe suffer tragedy early in life as both their mothers are killed by poachers. Several years later, wildlife photographer Gregg O'Hara (Bill Paxton) discovers the giant-sized Joe and convinces Jill to transport him to Los Angeles where he can be safe.
Although the original Mighty Joe Young benefited from special effects by Willis O'Brien and Ray Harryhausen, the remake has some pretty spectacular effects of its own. Joe is designed by master monster maker Rick Baker and executed using special makeup prosthetics, a life-sized articulated anamatronic and computer generated images. You will be amazed by the new Mighty Joe Young. One can't help but speculate after seeing this film what great effects a remake of King Kong might have.
