the Episcopal Church Kalendar
WHITE: symbol of purity, joy and the bright light of truth. Used for days of the Church Year relating to our Lord; for a Saint, if not a martyr; Baptism, Confirmation, Ordination, Marriage, Burial of the Dead; Thanksgiving and Independence Days, Anniversary and Dedication Festivals, and services celebrating the Blessed Sacrament. VIOLET: symbol of penitence, expectation. Used in Lent and Advent; may be used for Burial of the Dead, Ember and Rogation Days. Unbleached linen or similar materials is an alternative for Lent. RED: symbol of blood, indicating Martyr's Days; also symbol of Holy Spirit used on Pentecost. Increasing usage for Holy Week and Ordinations. GREEN: symbol of hope, life and nature; the common color of the Church. Used for seassons after Epiphany and Pentecost. BLACK: symbol of mourning. May be used for Good Friday and Burials. Increasing usage of blue for days of the Blessed Virgin Mary and dark blue for Advent.
